When is massage helpful?

A few common reasons clients seek massage with us:

  • A desire to relax/stress relief
  • Referred by their Doctor, Chiropractor, Physical Therapist or other health practitioner
  • For pain relief related to the musculoskeletal issues (back and neck pain, headaches, etc)
  • To recover from an injury
  • For support during and after pregnancy
  • A desire to be more connected and tuned into your body, and to feel grounded 
  • For support during training for an event (a marathon, soccer season, triathlon, cycling, skiing, high school/college athletics)
  • A desire to stay active and do the things you love
  • To aid in relieving symptoms of depression and or anxiety

For starters,  just what happens during a massage?

If you’ve never had a massage (or have never had a massage at Therapy Works), you may have questions.

At your first session, we will review your intake paperwork, possibly do some hands-on assessment, watch you walk or move,  and make a game plan for the your treatment session.  This will take some extra time so plan on your first visit running 15-30 min longer. 

Your therapist will step out of the room to allow you to disrobe and get on the massage table, which is dressed with sheets and a blanket. We keep the rooms and tables heated, and your therapist will keep you modestly draped throughout the session. (If undressing is not an option, just let your therapist know as we have suitable techniques we can use partially or fully clothed. 

During your session, please feel free to ask questions or share feedback. It’s also just fine to say little, relax and tune in to your body.

At the end of your session, your massage therapist will step out to allow you to dress, and then meet you for a brief consultation.   The therapist may also offer some suggestions for things you can try at home to support the changes made during the session, and schedule future appointments as prescribed by the physician or as desired.  

Do you do deep tissue massage?

Yes, we do. All of our therapists have training and are very experienced with deep tissue techniques.  However,  your therapist will assess to determine if this is the best modality for you and your condition.  Some other modalities may be a better choice and thus give you a better outcome. 

Will you accept my health insurance, worker’s compensation claim, or motor vehicle accident claim for payment?

Potentially, yes; please call for clarification. 

Is it OK to work with a different person in the future?

Absolutely! One of the strengths of Therapy Works practice is access to different practitioners in a collaborative environment. Any therapist you see will also have access to your notes from your earlier sessions, and the ability to consult with each therapist that has treated you at Therapy Works if you wish. 

What massage techniques do you use?

  • DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE: A variety of massage techniques that are often applied with more pressure, with the intent to decrease/release areas of stubborn muscle tension
  • SWEDISH MASSAGE: Smooth, flowing strokes, usually with less pressure, designed to promote overall relaxation
  • MYOFASCIAL RELEASE TECHNIQUES: “Myofascial” refers to the blend of connective tissue and muscle that make up the layered “fabric” of our bodies. Due to injury, diet, lack of movement, illness, genetics or health conditions this fabric can get “stuck” and glue down to underlying layers, causing restriction, tension and pain. Myofascial techniques focus on ungluing these layers to promote improved motion. 
  • SPORTS MASSAGE TECHNIQUES: Gentle rocking, stretching and compressions designed to gently loosen or warm up muscle tissue and joints.
  • STRETCHING: This can be active, assisted, or passive with neuromuscular techniques to increase range of motion, muscle re-education and muscle memory. 
  • Structural Relief Therapy (SRT) 
  • CRANIO-SACRAL THERAPY: A very gentle form of bodywork which works with flow of the cerebral spinal fluid and the bones of the skull and spine to support optimal functioning of the central nervous system and promote overall health.
  • INTRAORAL TECHNIQUES FOR TMJ AND HEADACHES: A mixture of craniosacral and myofascial techniques performed inside the mouth to release tension and promote balance (Cristina)

Do I have to get undressed?

While clients usually do, this is definitely not required. Many sports massage, stretching,  SRT, and cranio-sacral techniques work well with clients fully clothed, in loose, comfortable clothing.

Do you offer spa services?

Our focus is therapeutic massage, and we do not offer pedicures, facials or body scrubs or wraps (although we like them, too!).
